An emerging but fast-growing industry of abortion providers performs abortions only through telemedicine, with no physical clinics. A federal court ruling Wednesday aimed at banning the mailing of abortion pills could make it much harder for them to operate.

U.S. telehealth and in-person abortion providers scrambled on Thursday to keep medication abortion services available after a federal appeals court ruled that the abortion pill mifepristone could be distributed amid ongoing litigation but with significant restrictions.

Abortion providers say no matter what the federal courts decide, people in Massachusetts will be able to end their pregnancies with medication here.
